Somalia and Turkey held talks on defense and military cooperation as the two nations continue to solidify their longstanding cooperation on national and regional security.
Federal republic of Somalia’s defense minister Hon. Hasan Ali Mohamed held talks with his counterpart, Turkey’s Minister for national Defense Hon. Hulusi Akar following an official working visit to Ankara.
Minister Hasan and senior officials from the Defense ministry, were first received in the Capital, Ankara by Somalia’s Ambassador to Turkey, H.E Ambassador Jama Abdullahi Mohamed and other senior officials from the Turkish National Defense forces.
Minister Mohamed and his delegation were the following day treated to a welcoming ceremony in an official military parade held at the headquarters of the Ministry of national Defense.
The two ministers representing the two great brotherly nations of Somalia and Turkey, discussed a range of issues aimed towards boosting the cooperation in the areas of defense and military cooperation.
The Ministers and their delegation later attended a closed door meeting involving senior officials from various ministerial departments.
“Somali people are our brothers and are very valuable to us,” .
Minister Akar said, while Speaking during the meeting.
“Our main wish is to see peace and long-term stability in Somalia and see the people living confidently in peace”. He added.
On his part, Minister Mohamed expressed appreciation on the progressive partnership between the two countries which has seen an improvement in cooperation.
“Our partnership in military and defense has been fruitful and we are grateful for the nature and success of our cooperation,” he finished.
The meeting comes only a few months after Turkey’s Minister Akar and chief of general staff gen. Yasar guler visited Mogadishu, Somalia for a wide range of talks on military relations and regional security issues between the two brotherly countries.
During the visit, Minister Akar, was received by Deputy Prime Minister Rt. Honourable Mahdi Guleid, Defence Minister Hon. Hasan Ali Mohammed, and Somali chief of staff major general Dahir Adan Elmi.
Turkey’s Ambassador to Mogadishu during that period, H.E Dr. Olgan Bekar was present.
He later held a meeting with Somali president H.E Mohammed Abdullahi Mohammed Farmaajo and Prime Minister, H.E Hassan Ali Khayre.
Currently, Somalia hosts Turkey’s largest military training base overseas and the military cooperation between the two brotherly nations dates back to the Ottoman Empire.
